For
literally thousands of years the crystal has fascinated
people
and been a source of beauty and perceived power. Yet
today,
many people look at a crystal and just see a shiny
clear stone
much like simple glass. The truth is that since
ancient times
people have tried to discover not only the
natural, but the
supernatural powers of crystal.
One of the ways that
crystals were used in ancient times was
for healing. The
medical experts of that time believed that
if you put a
crystal over certain points on the body, much
like today's
acupuncture, that the crystal had the power to
increase the
flow of physical and psychic energies to
whatever part of the
body was afflicted.
The crystal was also considered
to be able
to assist in the
diagnosis of certain illnesses. One ancient
emperor would
get a piece of mirror-like crystal and have
the
patient stand
in front of it with their hands crossed over
their heart. Supposedly
the reflection and glow of the crystal
would illuminate the
inside of the body, including the bones,
and then the doctor
would be able to pinpoint the cause of the
illness in order
to prescribe the best treatment.
The
Hopi tribe, a highly civilized Native American group
from the
Southwestern U.S. also used crystals for medical
purposes.
Their medicine man would put the crystals on an
afflicted
person and use it to discover any blockage or
obstacle to an
individuals physical "currents" so that they
could treat it
and heal the individual.
Crystal used in jewelry has
a dual purpose. Not only is it
beautiful and diamond-like with
its cut and shimmer, but it
is also thought by some to have
healing properties. The
belief is that a stone with an even
number of cuts creates
positive energy and a stone with an odd
number of cuts can
have medical healing properties.
Another
function of crystal is to transmit radio waves.
This is
possible in its simplest form by using a toy
crystal set.
Crystal is known to have value as resonators
and oscillators,
both controlling and transmitting
frequencies for
telecommunications and radio. This is a
function of crystal
that dates back to ancient times.
As modern research
moves forward to uncover the multiple
uses of crystal, the
findings can be compared to ancient
uses and we realize that
we are only scratching the surface
of the many possibilities
in which crystal can be used
today. In their simplest
functional form, crystals can
store and discharge slight, and
can also convert sunlight
directly into energy.
The
crystal's beauty is definitely more than skin deep and
may yet
prove to be even more valuable than anyone, even in
ancient
times had thought. We may have just scratched the
surface.
