An aging brain
can cause many
inconveniences. Most of us
greatly fear the process of aging
primarily for this very
reason. Diseases like Alzheimer's are
a real risk as our
brains age. Even simple tasks like trying
to remember people
and events, become increasingly difficult
as we age and our
memory starts to slip away. Fortunately,
modern medical
science has helped us learn a lot about the
brain's aging
process and what we can do to slow it down.
A
healthy body ensures a healthy mind. Our mental health is
inextricably
linked with our physical health and well-being.
By making sure
that we get adequate physical exercise, we
can not only keep
our bodies healthy longer, but also ensure
the long term
health of our brains.
While all kinds of exercise
are beneficial (including
walking, gardening, etc.), you can
also try some exercises
that are especially designed to help
our physical and mental
selves remain in tandem. Ancient
Eastern disciplines like
Tai Chi and Yoga focus specifically
on the mind-body
connection. These programs provide many
variations for all
skill levels.
Physical
exercise, while helpful in slowing down aging in
the brain,
cannot completely replace exercise especially
for the brain.
Reading is one of those things that can
improve the health of
the brain very well. Even reading
novels helps. However,
occasional readings on serious
subjects can help keep the
brain young and alert.
Another great exercise for
the brain is to do crossword
puzzles. The brain gets some much
needed work to do when it
has to think and recall information
to solve a crossword.
Other games that can help to slow down
the brain's aging are
word games like anagrams and jumbles and
also card games
like memory that you can enjoy playing with
your grandkids.
Exercise for the brain must be
accompanied with adequate
rest to slow down aging. The brain
gets stressed in its
later years because of years of
inadequate sleep. It is
important to get a good night's sleep
on most nights to help
the brain rest and recover from the
day's work. It has been
shown that sleep also helps the brain
to sort through the
day's information and helps you prepare
better for the next
day.
Related to proper
rest is time out for meditation.
Meditation does not have to
mean sitting in a funny
position and contemplating the deep
meanings of the
universe. It does not always even have to mean
an empty
mind. What meditation is, however, involves a slowing
down
and time for quiet reflection without falling asleep.
Meditation
has been shown to help the brain function more
efficiently.
You
must take steps to avoid the aging process from
affecting your
brain and slowing down its faculties. Its
never too soon to
start taking care of your brain by giving
it proper rest and
exercise. The sooner you start taking
care of your brain, the
longer it will stay healthy and
active.
